that could be an engine from an earlier cb250t dream, the bit thats raising a flag for me is if it is from a dream then someones gone to quite a bit of trouble to get rid of the kickstart shaft? have you ever counted the gears? cb250t had 5 speed, cb250n had 6 speed

I agree with Buster. CB250TE is a 250 dream engine from 1977/78. Have you had the clutch cover off to reveal what lies beneath? This is what the clutch cover on those looked like from the factory:

I've not actually got the spanners on it yet. May have a play this weekend. Are there any other differences other than gearbox?

I have had the Honda books out and agree with the conclusion of a 250 Dream engine
Gearbox should be a 5 speed, have a look on the casing beside the gear change and try the gearbox
Both the 250n and 250t have the same final drive ratio of 2.733 according to the book - as already stated looks like the engine has been in bits to remove the kickstart
Its been out of the frame as the front bolts are incorrect

I would rather have a 5 speed box on my SD, dont really see the need for a 6 speed
One comment for the photos, of you are starting it up I would replace the carb overflow pipes that are missing so if the needles stick petrol does not go all over the engine
Look forward to seeing some full shots of the bike, it looks like t is mostly there

it looks like yours has superdream covers on at both sides, if so the stator cover will state six speed so I'd count through the gears and see how many there are. its not an outrageous leap that someone could have fitted a six speed box as you need to go into that part of the motor to remove the kickstart shaft. there were I think some differences in the stator on the 400 models but I'm not sure about the 250's, to most intents and purposes they engines are the same (other than the gears and the clutch cover and stator cover) they're also much more practical with the later clutch cover as you can adjust the balance chain without draining the oil
