Perhaps that bolt was put in on purpose with a collection of other bolts so someone could shake it up a bit to remove rust from inside the tank and got left in when the rest were removed because it's not magnetic, just a theory

Good theory. I was watching the Mustie1 video of the homemade tractor and he had the tank off that, threw some large nuts in and bungeed it to the rear wheel of his truck. He had it jacked up and ran it like that. Quite a bit of rust came out.

Anyone who has ever been fool enough to decide to strip a tank will know how I feel now. This began with the fairly easy strip and repair of Lord Beer's tank. Then as I also need one, I did my own, which when stripped revealed it was not and NA tank, but NB, which now may as well be done. I then needed to fix my tatty option NA tank. I also have another tank which as the welder was out, I may as well do. Now anyone who has also welded a tank will tell you that just coz you weld em, does not mean they stopped leaking. So you have to keep checking em with a bit of paper towel under em, find a new hole, weld it up, do it again, and again, and again. Getting bored now. EVENTUALY you get a sealed tank that now needs shaping (Perhaps sealing anyway) and priming. Anyone want to have a go ? Be my guest. Truth is, they are all likely to be in a poor state after 40 years and that bad design, so they will be worth a bob or two when turned back into this - Fit for a few more years I hope.

Sounds like a complete and utter ballache hence why I would rather dig deep and find nos. I simply do not have this level of skill on my resume as I am sure many of us don't.
Totally admire what you do Duffer.

Kind of you. My problem is whenever I dig deep I end up in a hole. Do like old stuff, so mending things became important. 🤪

The task has indeed escalated to epic pain in the arse proportions, few have the skills that are necessary to complete such a task, but all are in no doubt that Sir Duffer has those skills and will produce nothing but the finest work 🍺

Do like old stuff, so mending things became important. 🤪 Can't believe someone had filled the indents on an NB tank to make it look earlier. That is a first for me (that I've heard about anyway) What way are you going with that one? Are you going to get it like it should be or persevere with continuing to make it look like the pre 81 version?

It's going back to original. I have a rough early tank which I will save then do both. Also have another spare which I may as well do too. Bloody production line here....

And that is why we need to be able to fix tanks 😳🤯

That tank's twice what I paid for the Black Pig.
We've started on taking the paint off it and it looks like it was originally Tanzanite blue, then painted black with the correct colour stripe applied before getting painted black over the top which reacted making it crazed. The corners look sound with the worst rust blisters around the filler.

Sounds like you may be lucky, but I would use a rust killer of some sort in the tank as it will need it in those lower triangles below the level of the tap. Water will have gathered over the years and corrosion will be there. Better safe than sorry. Other mistake is that when you take the tap off the filter tube often stays put. You can tell when you look at the threaded pipe, you will see a brown inner ring. Pull, don't push.

At the moment all we've done is taken the tank off and had a little scrape. Next is to get the filter out to fully drain the tank and then take it down to bare metal for a good look.
