I've just bought one of these from Silvers ,what I need to know is does this fit with the flat side uppermost and does it go in from outside the crankcase cover or from the inside ?

Hi Tel, sometimes it's good to check on CMSNL if your not sure.
No need for me with this as...
Normal practise, seal side to oil, so yes, the flat side is effectively outside the engine...
Get a clutch cover gasket as when seal is removed ( your gunna have some fun doing that ) the spade outer end worn drive can dislodge inside, meaning an important but tiny thrust washer can come adrift...
Don't forget the large washer underneath the seal.
The seal comes out, and refitted from outside the clutch cover. A suitable bit of tube helps with refitting the seal.
With the clutch cover off, an ideal time to flush out the sump lavaryth, attend to the adjustable adjusting quadrant of the balance chain adjustment, kick start oil trough, and finally the clutch basket "fingers" inner surface that effectively trap crap from the oil, not to mention attending to the tachometer drive oil seal etc...
That very important but tiny washer should not ( MUST NOT ) be allowed to "float around" inside the engine.
Chains and gears not to mention a good end mill chewing away the clutch cover.....
Make sure crap trapped in oil pressure switch area is flushed out else the crap will cover the small main drive gear etc. on the end of the crank. Clean that area and allow to dry before removing the clutch cover.

All sorted and back together ,just needs a bit more oil in it before it goes anywhere as I did'nt have enough

Cool, how was the balance shaft quadrant and dot?
Hopefully after adjusting the quadrant position leaving lots of slot left for future adjustment, its sprung loaded to rotate anticlockwise to adjust chain, the dot was "after noon" position, meaning all good and lots of life left in that system.
As you know at 9 o clock it's worn out and about to go over centre...engine out and lower crank case off.
Balance chain work can be done with cyl head in situe, so no need to touch the sometimes troublesome cylinder head bolts, particularly the 4 centre ones !
My Sunday task has also been done, shed roof covering on and much tidier now.
