My forks are stripped and all done with new seals etc. I am sure this is a very stupid question but how do I stop the damper turning in the tube so as to dip tight and seal the allen bolt with copper washer in the bottom of the lower leg?

... or if the spring is not in, get someone to hold the top of the stanchion, whilst pushing the top of the bottom tube down onto the rebound spring, with a piece of chunky dowel (broom handle?), whilst you hold the case and turn the cap screw to crush the copper washer ...

ok, thanks. I am trying right then!! working on my own though so do not have help...been trying to squeeze leg together with spring in it and turn bolt but not got it to nip yet.

well one was easy, the other just would not tighten. So pulled it out, cleaned threads and added a 2nd copper washer as it looked like maybe the bolt would not quite go in enough and that sorted it!

I ask how did you get the bottom Allan bolts out ??
If the spring is in, pushed down enough ( I use a flanged 14mm bolt welded to suitable rod and T handle so clocks are "missed"...much easier than using and Allan key...) and the upper Allan ring started ( don't not cross thread ) and lightly bottomed in its stanchion thread, this will stop the damper tube from turning so that the bottom Allan bolt with its washer will start and tieghten.
I assume the stanchion is upsidedown so the alloy "taper" is in place...
I can remove and refit the forks alloy "legs" with the fork stanchions in situ...

Did you see post on seat catch bolt? yes thanks I did see the seat catch pics and that enabled me to correct previous owners mistakes on that part! it latches down now though I need one correct bolt.
