so sunny afternoon, I finally feel as if I'm winning a bit with the new house, time for a blast over Lancashires hill country towards Hebden Bridge. it didnt start well, bike only running on one pot, quick bit of plug cleaning and swearing and I was off got almost to Hebden Bridge but something wasn't quite right, pulled over for a look at the plugs and noticed petrol pissing out of the nearside overflow pipe, bugger, oh well not a major disaster and with some jiggling the fuel tap on and off on the way home it was running really well when it had the correct fuel level in the float bowl. time to raid the spares I think. interesting bit of history on the way home

quick fettle this morning. I see the 'vanish into thin air' fairy is doing the rounds today. it seems I'd had the foresight to fit allen head bolts to the float bowls on this set of carbs (phew) problem is I dropped the float valve putting it back in and can't find it for love nor money happily I'm an insane hoarder, rebuild carbs with all new kit but keep all the old stuff 'just in case' and I now seem to have a working float valve. looking forward to a bit of a spin this aft to see how it goes

made no bloody difference, bugger, right back home and carbs off
cleaned the seat (looked fine before but you never know) and swapped the float (as a precaution) back together and took it for a spin, seems much better no petrol overflowing (fingers crossed it stays that way) quite a bit of popping and banging on the overrun though. cure for that, don't be such a wuss and keep the throttle pinned
